Crown lengthening is a dental procedure that reshapes excess gum tissue and/or bone in order to expose more of the natural tooth. This can be done to one tooth or to several teeth to expose a natural, broad smile. Occasionally, crown lengthening is also recommended in order to make a restorative or cosmetic dental procedure possible. For example, if a tooth is badly decayed or broken below the gum line and has insufficient tooth structure, crown lengthening adjusts the gum and bone level to expose more of the tooth so it can be restored.
